Luzu asked Nanquan, ” ‘People don’t recognize the wish-fulfilling jewel which is intimately obtained from the tathagata-garbha (heart/womb of buddha)’. What is the garbha?” Nanquan said, “It is that in me which comes and goes with you.” Luzu said, “What about that which doesn’t come and go?” Nanquan said, “It’s also the garbha.” Luzu said, “What is the jewel?” Nanquan called him “Teacher Luzu!” Luzu responded, “Yes?” Nanquan said, “Go – you don’t meet with my words.”

Kokyo Henkel has been practicing Zen since 1990, in residence at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, most recently as Tanto (Head of Practice), Green Gulch Farm Zen Center, No Abode Hermitage in Mill Valley, Bukkokuji Monastery in Japan, and Santa Cruz Zen Center.
He was ordained as a Zen priest in 1994 by Tenshin Anderson Roshi and received Dharma Transmission from him in 2010. Kokyo is interested in exploring how the original teachings of Buddhadharma from ancient India, China, and Japan are still very much alive and useful in present-day America to bring peace and harmony to this troubled world.

An old time buddha said, ‘earth, grass, trees, and all living beings are engaged in buddha activity.’ Buddha activity is the unceasing process of freeing all beings so they may live in peace and harmony. The buddha ancestors called this buddha activity zazen.
Following are four dharma talks given by Tenshin Reb Anderson during a two-day retreat which took place on October 5-6, 2019. They discuss the study, practice and realization of this great activity.
