DESCRIPTION:The Full Moon Ceremony acknowledges the karma created by our intentional actions\, and reminds us to renew our commitment to the ethical conduct expressed as the 16 Bodhisattva Precepts. These are guiding principles for our daily conduct in the world. This ceremony is rooted in a ritual from pre-Buddhist India. To prepare for the ceremony there are two 25 minutes meditation periods separated by 10 minutes of walking meditation. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Family Sangha\, sponsored by Sacramento Dharma Center with the support of Sacramento Buddhist Meditation Group\, Valley Streams Zen Sangha\, and Sacramento Insight Meditation. \nOn last Sundays\, parents\, uncles and aunts\, grandparents\, friends\, are invited to come to SDC and share the Buddha path of wisdom and kindness with their children.  Adults are expected to stay on site near their children. \nPlease come to Family Sangha through the West Lobby. \nParticipating family member(s) can join the sangha meditation and/or dharma talk\, while their children enjoy Family Sangha! Please check in with coordinators Ajit or Helen first. Family Sangha is family-created\, all volunteer\, so we ask that newcomers please stay with their children in the program for their first and second visits. Activities focus on fundamental teachings through conversation\, mindfulness\, song(s)\, story\, movement\, nature dharma and active play outside\, snacks\, art and even mindful clean-up.  Families are welcome to stay for refreshments at noon with SBMG. \nIf you have any questions\, or wish to help in any way\, please contact Ajit and Helen at familydharma@sbmg.org.  We are actively seeking childcare helpers and a mindfulness facilitator.  Stipends are available. SUMMARY:The Illusion of Separate Self - One-day Retreat led by Kokyo Henkel (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:In morning and afternoon discussions\, we will explore the Buddha’s teaching of the discontent that arises from the unconscious belief in separate self\, and the freedom that comes from not holding this belief. \nKokyo Henkel was ordained as a Zen priest in 1994 by Tenshin Reb Anderson Roshi\, receiving the Dharma name Kokyo Yakai (Luminous Owl\, Midnight Liberation 光梟夜解). He received Dharma Transmission from Tenshin Roshi in 2010\, becoming a lineage-holder authorized to guide others on the path. From 2010 – 2020 Kokyo was teacher at the Santa Cruz Zen Center. He has also been practicing with the Tibetan Dzogchen (“Great Perfection”) Teacher Tsoknyi Rinpoche since 2003\, in California\, Colorado\, and Kathmandu. \nOur retreat day will include sitting and walking meditation\, a Dharma talk and afternoon discussion period. Outside the meditation hall we will maintain noble silence. Please bring a bag lunch. \nTickets can be purchased below with suggested donation $20 -$100. No one will be excluded for lack of funds. DESCRIPTION:Reverend Mary Mocine\, former abbess of Clear Water Zendo\, trained at San Francisco Zen Center\, Berkeley Zen Center and Tassajara Zen Mountain Monastery. She was priest ordained by Sojun Mel Weitsman in 1994 and received dharma transmission from him in 2005. She also studied with Jikai Myo-ōn Yvonne Rand\, former Abbess Zenkei Blanche Hartman and former Abbots Zoketsu Norman Fischer and Tenshin Reb Anderson of the San Francisco Zen Center. \nRev. Mocine graduated from Hastings College of the Law in 1971. In 1988 she became interested in Zen Buddhism and took three months off in 1989 to do intensive residential practice at Green Gulch Farm\, after which she never returned to practicing law. \nIn 1998 Rev. Mocine formed a meditation group in Vallejo California. The group grew and Clear Water Zendo was formally opened in January 2000. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Family Sangha\, sponsored by Sacramento Dharma Center with the support of Sacramento Buddhist Meditation Group\, Valley Streams Zen Sangha\, and Sacramento Insight Meditation. \nOn last Sundays\, parents\, uncles and aunts\, grandparents\, friends\, are invited to come to SDC and share the Buddha path of wisdom and kindness with their children.  Adults are expected to stay on site near their children. \nPlease come to Family Sangha through the West Lobby. \nParticipating family member(s) can join the sangha meditation and/or dharma talk\, while their children enjoy Family Sangha! Please check in with coordinators Ajit or Helen first. DESCRIPTION:When two arrow points meet\, this has nothing to do with the power of skill!\n(Jewel Mirror Samadhi) \nIn our practice together we will consider this Truth of practice realization – that realization comes spontaneously and is not within the realm of consciousness (Genjo Koan) – it does not appear in the realm of perception – because it is unconstructedness in stillness (Self-Receiving and Employing Samadhi) \nIt matters that we come to practice together! Bring a sack lunch to enjoy sharing a meal. \nHalf-day retreat (8:30 am-12:30 pm) includes sitting and walking meditation\, a Dharma talk and discussion period. Outside the meditation hall we will maintain noble silence. \nRev. Parāvṛtti Doralee Grindler Katonah serves as Ino\, or head of the meditation hall. She studied in the Soto Zen lineage with Sojun Diane Martin\, founder and guiding teacher of Udumbara Zen Center in Illinois and Rev.
