SUMMARY:Discussion: Jiaoan's Sand in the Eye
DESCRIPTION:Linda Dekker and Karen Hamilton will facilitate Koan Study. This will be an opportunity to get a taste of what we do in the Women Ancestors group which meets every third Thursday at 9 am. The Koan we will look at is Jiaoan’s Sand in the Eye\, pp. 90-92 of The Hidden Lamp: Stories from Twenty-five Centeries of Awakened Women\, ed. by Florence Caplow and Susan Moon.  We chose this\, in part\, because the commentary is offered by Zenki Mary Mocine\, who was scheduled to give a Dharma talk\, but is unable to do so due to an injury. \nThe case:\nJiaoan was the niece of a high official of the Song dynasty. When she was young\, she decided not to marry or bear children and she set her heart on the way of Chan. She experienced a clear awakening at the words of Master Yuanwu Keqin as he spoke to the assembly. Later\, Yuanwu said to her\, “You should go on to erase your views–then you will finally be free.”\nShe answered in verse:\nThe pillar pulls out the bone sideways;\nthe void shows its claws and fangs;\neven if one profoundly understands\,\nthere is still sand in the eye.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Yogacara (1st of 3 lectures)
DESCRIPTION:Yogacara and Madhyamaka are two schools of Indian Buddhism closely associated with the rise of Mahayana Buddhism in the centuries following the life of the Buddha.  These schools were active during the period that Buddhism entered China (1st century or before)\, making them influential in the development of Chinese Buddhism and Zen.  Madhyamaka translates as “middle way” and is associated with teachings on emptiness.  Yogacara variously translates as “yoga practice\,” “mind-only\,” or “representation-only.”  Yogacara focuses on the central function of consciousness as the shaper/creator of reality\, going so far as to teach that there is no external world\, there is “only consciousness.”  You can see the influence of Yogacara teaching in this poem by Han Shan: \nWho takes the Cold Mountain Road takes a road that never ends\nthe rivers are long and piled with rocks\nthe streams are wide and choked with grass\nit’s not the rain that makes the moss slick\nand it’s not the wind that makes the pines moan\nwho can get past the tangles of the world\nand sit with me in the clouds \nOur lecture series\, presented by So On Jim Hare over three weeks\, will give an introduction/overview of the Yogacara school\, a session discussing one of the seminal sutras of the school\, and a session introducing a set of verses that were composed in the 5th Century to convey the essence of the school’s teachings. \nFor advance study\, these books may be helpful:\nInside Vasubandhu’s Yogacara\, by Ben Connelly.\nThe Third Turning of the Wheel (chapter 8)\, by Tenshin Reb Anderson.

SUMMARY:Practice Circle led by Doralee Grindler Katonah
DESCRIPTION:Letting Go and Turning Towards ~ The pathway to freedom from suffering. \n‘A student at Tassajara sat facing Suzuki Roshi on a tatami mat in his room. The student said he couldn’t stop snacking in the kitchen and asked what he should do. Suzuki reached under his table\, “Here\, have some jelly beans\,” he said.’ (from To Shine One Corner of the World – Moments with Shunyru Suzuki\, p.12) \nThe Buddha spoke of the causes of suffering to be clinging and turning away\, and especially clinging to self and avoiding no self. Zazen releases these opposites and yet this isn’t easy. Trying not to cling could become turning away and turning towards could become a form of clinging. \n\nIn this practice circle we will inquire:  What is our practice showing us about this truth? How do we give whatever arises its freedom?\n\nPractice Circle Guidelines (as adapted from the Zen Center of Los Angeles):\nWhen speaking\, we practice speaking from integrity and speak the truth as we know it. We stay focused on our own experience as opposed to taking about others or talking abstractly.\nIn listening\, we try not to interrupt\, even with our thoughts. We practice receiving whatever is being offered by another without attachments or judgements.\n In silence\, we allow all things to arise and pass away\, accepting and honoring different expressions and perspectives. We sit with our discomfort.

SUMMARY:Practice Circle: Acceptance & Respect in Community
DESCRIPTION:Practice Circle led by So On Jim Hare \nThe Three Treasures are the foundation of the Practice Circle: (1) the Oneness of Buddha\, (2) the Diversity of Dharma\, (3) the Harmony of Sangha. The circle itself is a container for being in the present\, manifesting just as we are in the truth of the moment. \nPractice Circle Guidelines (as adapted from the Zen Center of Los Angeles):\nWhen speaking\, we practice speaking from integrity and speak the truth as we know it. SUMMARY:Practice Talk by Doralee Grindler Katonah
DESCRIPTION:Peggy McIntosh\, in her article “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack”\, describes white privilege as “an invisible package of unearned assets.” These advantages in a very deep way remain invisible to white people because they are built in to our way of life\, and we often mistake them for just how life is. White privilege and racism are reflections of each other.  We practice to liberate all beings…..addressing white privilege is our side of the coin which remains hidden from our view. \nDoralee will share her learnings and invite us to consider these insights through discussion and a guided exercise.
