SUMMARY:Rohatsu Sesshin – Opening Evening Program (Online Only)
DESCRIPTION:During Rohatsu sesshin we celebrate Shakyamuni Buddha’s enlightment by dedicating ourselves to zazen practice. As the darkest days of the year approach\, we sit together with the principle of awakening\, fully opening to the ‘wisdom beyond wisdom’ that becomes bright in sitting meditation. \nThis year’s Rohatsu will be co-led by So’on Jim Hare and Paravritti Doralee Grindler Katonah. The teaching will be based on the Sattipatthana Sutra\, the sutra on the four establishments or foundations of mindfullness. \nThis retreat is offered partly online and partly in-person. The in-person days include formal Oryoki meals for lunch and dinner. There will be Dharma talks on days 2\, 6\, 7\, and 8. For more information or to request a reduced fee or scholarship\, please contact us at info@valleystreamszen.org. \nNote that this retreat is intended for experienced practitioners. Participants should have a regular sitting practice and have attended several one-day retreats at Valley Streams or elsewhere. There will be instruction in Oryoki meal practice for those not familiar with it. \nRegister for week-long program on Eventbrite\n\nSunday Schedule:\n7:30 pm Welcome and Orientation\n8:00 pm Zazen\n8:30 pm Refuges  (PDF)

SUMMARY:"Realizing Non-Duality" - Half-day Sitting led by Rev. So’on Jim Hare (In Person Only)
DESCRIPTION:“The Way is not difficult\, just avoid picking and choosing.” So said one of our ancient Chinese Zen teachers. The irony of this statement has not been lost over the centuries: as human beings we seem to be built for picking and choosing. Does that mean we will always be remote from the Buddha Way? That can’t be so! But how do we leap beyond our preferences\, the strong habit falling into one side or the other? This question will be the theme of our retreat. \nThis half-day retreat will feature periods of sitting and walking meditation and a Dharma talk by So’on Jim Hare. A social lunch will follow the retreat; please bring your own. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. If this will be your first extended sitting with us\, please send us a note at info@valleystreamszen.org to introduce yourself. \nPlease register here.

SUMMARY:"In Front of the Door is the Land of Stillness and Light" - One-day Retreat led by Danan Wark (In Person Only)

Your registration on a sliding scale offers support to our guest teacher and the ongoing activities of Valley Streams Zen Sangha. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Danan received precepts in 2009 and Inka in 2019 from Zen Master George Bo Mun Bowman\, the founder of the Single Flower Sangha. Danan has practiced in the Rinzai tradition and studied koans with Bo Mun for over 20 years. He has also practiced in the Soto tradition with Tenshin Reb Anderson roshi at No Abode Hermitage for more than a decade. In 2014 Danan established Cloud Zendo\, a sangha that presently meets each Saturday (except this one!) at 8:30 a.m. in Auburn. \nOur retreat day will include sitting and walking meditation\, Dharma talks and afternoon discussion period. SUMMARY:"Letting Go of Self-Concern" - Half-day Sitting led by Rev. So’on Jim Hare (In Person Only)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a half-day of sitting and walking meditation with a Dharma talk focusing on the practice that releases us from self-obsession. \n\n\n\n\n\nThere is a movie playing in the untrained consciousness. This movie stars me\, is produced and directed by me. The plot of the movie features my interests\, my problems\, and my desires. Other people are the supporting cast. \nThe direction of Zen practice is toward a more inclusive\, less self-centered awareness. How do we make that movie? Arousing the spirit of awakening is to imagine and realize a more panoramic vision of the self. \nThis half-day retreat will feature periods of sitting and walking meditation and a Dharma talk by So’on Jim Hare. A social lunch will follow the retreat; please bring your own. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. For more information\, please email us at info@valleystreamszen.org. \n\n\n\n\n\nPlease register here.

SUMMARY:"Your Original Face" - One-day Retreat led by Kokyo Henkel (In Person Only)
DESCRIPTION:The Sixth Ancestor of Chinese Zen awakening his Dharma brother by asking “without thinking of good and bad\, what is your original face?” \nThis daylong retreat will focus on the 24th case in the koan collection known as the Mumonkan\, or the Gateless Barrier. There will be morning and afternoon talks\, zazen\, and optional dokusan (private interviews). Kokyo Henkel has been practicing Zen since 1990 in residence at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center\, Green Gulch Farm Zen Center\, No Abode Hermitage in Mill Valley\, and Bukkokuji Monastery in Japan. SUMMARY:Taking Refuge in the Body: One-day Retreat Led by Rev. So'on Jim Hare (In Person Only)
DESCRIPTION:In sitting and walking meditation\, Dharma talk and discussion we will consider “one essence in three bodies\,” aka the triple body of Buddha. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Platform Sutra says: “One’s skin and flesh is the physical body… but you can’t take refuge in it. Just be enlightened to the three bodies of the self-nature\, and this will be to recognize the Buddha of the self-nature.” How do we recognize and enjoy the Buddha body within our ourselves and others? This inquiry will be the subject of our retreat\, which will consist of sitting and walking meditation\, Dharma talk and discussion. \nPlease bring a bag lunch. A donation of $20-$80 is requested. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. If this will be your first one-day sitting\, please contact us before registering at info@valleystreamszen.org \nPlease register here.

SUMMARY:The path of Zen: Half-day Sitting led by So’on Jim Hare (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:The path of Zen: Can you get there from here? \nIn many Zen texts and teachings\, the path of Zen is described as what not to do\, such as “don’t take the mind road” or “cease all the movement of the conscious mind.” What is the reason for this? How does it help us in our practice? We will consider these questions through sitting zazen and hearing a Dharma talk at our half-day sitting on Saturday\, September 7th\, 8:30 -12:30. \nLed by So’on Jim Hare. A social lunch will follow this sitting – please bring your own. \nTickets can be purchased below with suggested donation $10 -$30. No one will be excluded for lack of funds. SUMMARY:Half-day Sitting (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:Join the sangha for a half-day of shikantaza or just sitting with alternating periods of zazen (sitting meditation) and kinhin (walking meditation)\, In the “grass-roof hermitage we “just sit” followed by a social lunch at noon (please bring a bag lunch). \nRegistration is requested\, but not required. Dana is appreciated. Donation can be made below. No one will be excluded for lack of funds. If this will be your first retreat day with us or you have questions\, please email: info@valleystreamszen.org \n  \nSong of the Grass-Roof Hermitage\nShih-t’ou (700-790) \nI’ve built a grass hut where there’s nothing of value.\nAfter eating\, I relax and enjoy a nap.\nWhen it was completed\, fresh weeds appeared.\nNow it’s been lived in – covered by weeds… \nJust sitting with head covered\, all things are at rest.\nThus\, this mountain monk doesn’t understand at all.\nLiving here they no longer work to get free.\nWho would proudly arrange seats\, trying to entice guests? \nShitou Xiqian was an early Chinese Zen master. He was called one of Zen’s two ‘great jewels’ For some years\, he meditated continually in a hut built on a rock at Nan Monastery\, and was thus called Shitou (“Priest Rock Head”) \n  \n
