DESCRIPTION:Yo-on Jeremy Levie\, born in San Francisco in 1970\, grew up in Fresno\, California\, where he excelled in math and developed a lifelong love of theater. After earning a B.A. in philosophy from Yale University\, Jeremy returned to San Francisco and soon discovered the San Francisco Zen Center. He moved to Tassajara Zen Mountain Center in 1995 and lived and practiced at the three temples of SFZC until the fall of 2019. He was ordained by Eijun Linda Cutts in 2005 and trained as shuso (head monk) with her in the spring of 2009. Jeremy served in various positions of significant responsibility while at SFZC\, including as the director and tanto (head of practice) at Green Gulch Farm Zen Center and twice on the SFZC Board of Directors. \n*Zoom link to program \nOur Monday night programs begin with zazen (sitting meditation) followed by a devotional service and dharma talk\, group discussion\, or practice circle. There are no membership requirements to participate. We invite donations to support the room rental\, visits by teachers\, and other sangha activities. DESCRIPTION:The Full Moon Ceremony acknowledges the karma created by our intentional actions\, and reminds us to renew our commitment to the ethical conduct expressed as the 16 Bodhisattva Precepts. These are guiding principles for our daily conduct in the world. This ceremony is rooted in a ritual from pre-Buddhist India. To prepare for the ceremony there are two 25 minutes meditation periods separated by 10 minutes of walking meditation. DESCRIPTION:On the second Monday of each month\, we offer a 40-minute introduction to Zen practice.  We focus on the art of sitting meditation\, with emphasis on posture\, breath and mental focus. This is for new meditators and those wishing to refresh their practice of meditative immersion. \nFollowing the instruction the Valley Streams Zen Sangha meets for a 30-minute meditation in the Dharma Hall followed by a 10-minute service and Dharma talk. DESCRIPTION:“What can you do about the world?” This phrase comes from a dialogue in the Book of Serenity (Case 12). In response the teacher asks: “What do you call the world?” In my copy of the text I wrote: “There is nothing it does not include.” In our practice circle this evening we will offer each person the opportunity to answer these questions in the light of each one’s awareness\, practice\, ethical concerns and sense of priority. \nRev. So’on Jim Hare serves as Tanto\, or head of practice. He lived in the San Francisco Zen Center community from 1980 to 1984 and was lay ordained by Tenshin Reb Anderson in 1985. DESCRIPTION:These lines beckon us to meet the clear\, still\, nature of reality as our own intimacy and immediacy. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis day-long retreat led by guest teacher Danan Wark will feature morning and afternoon talks\, zazen\, and optional dokusan (private interviews). Your registration on a sliding scale offers support to our guest teacher and the ongoing activities of Valley Streams Zen Sangha. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Contact info@valleystreamszen.org to request a scholarship or if this will be your first retreat with us. \nDanan is a teacher in the Single Flower Sangha line that descends from the Kwan Um School of Zen\, which in turn derives from the Sudeoksa mountain lineage of the Jogye Order of Korean Zen (Seon). Danan received precepts in 2009 and Inka in 2019 from Zen Master George Bo Mun Bowman\, the founder of the Single Flower Sangha. Danan has practiced in the Rinzai tradition and studied koans with Bo Mun for over 20 years. He has also practiced in the Soto tradition with Tenshin Reb Anderson roshi at No Abode Hermitage for more than a decade. In 2014 Danan established Cloud Zendo\, a sangha that presently meets each Saturday (except this one!) at 8:30 a.m. in Auburn. \nOur retreat day will include sitting and walking meditation\, Dharma talks and afternoon discussion period. DESCRIPTION:Eli Brown-Stevenson has spent the past decade living at Tassajara and City Center (SFZC). He is currently a resident priest in the city and serves as the Director of Diversity\, Inclusion\, and Belonging for the three temples. \nPrior to joining SFZC\, Eli worked in the secular world\, most notably in for-profit education and as a benefits liaison for employee wellness programs. After a decade of exploring various practices\, he decided to leave the corporate world and immerse himself in formal residential practice. \nEli’s Zen practice is deeply influenced by his main teacher\, Maya—his daughter whom he met when she was born in 2017.
